Coffee Talk: Siphon Coffee

Some coffee shops have newspapers, some have mugs for sale, and Siphon Coffee has frogger.

I've been wanting to venture out of my Starbucks bubble and try some independent coffee houses in Houston.  I'm really not picky when it comes to my coffee, but I am addicted to the iced coffee at Starbucks.  I know there are tons of great coffee shops surrounding the 713, so I'm on a mission to try them!

First stop: Siphon Coffee.  Parking sucks, but it's Montrose.  Chances are the lot will be full, but we didn't have a problem parking on the side streets around the corner.  We walked in and were greeted by the fresh aroma of coffee beans, freshly baked pastries, and textbooks (there were actually a good number of people reading books instead of Kindles...yay!).

Siphon Coffee is full of students and hipsters of all ages.  Good thing I bought a new flannel!  You'll feel a bit left out if you aren't sporting equal rights bumper stickers on your laptop.  I'm all for equal rights, but I keep my electronic bling to a minimum.  Depending on the time you go, it might be pretty hard to snag a table.

I'm not too fancy when it comes to my coffee, so I kept it basic and went for a latte with almond milk.  It was served at the perfect temperature and was tasty, but nothing that I haven't had before.

The most intriguing thing on the menu is the Siphon special.  When I saw a $7.00 coffee on the menu, I had to ask about it.  You can order it for 1 or 2, and this coffee is individually brewed in an almost psychedelic looking apparatus.  It's less bitter than regular coffee and hasn't been pressed, so the beans are very fresh and aromatic.  The display is neat too, and it looked like most of the patrons went for this special.  Not me though, I'll stick to my basic latte.  I'm interested to try it on my next trip though, since it's only fair to try the signature item on the menu!

My favorite part had to be the bathroom -- They offer complimentary tampons, Nivea body lotion, and hairspray!  Looks like I have nothing to worry about on my next trip.

Post-Workout Fuel at Biskit Junkie

The first thing I think about after a good workout is what I'm going to eat.  We all know how important it is to feed our muscles after rigorous exercise, and what better way to get those gains than biscuits, waffles, and bacon?

Biskit Junkie had been on my radar for a few weeks.  I saw a friend's photo on Facebook of a biscuit he ordered, and I immediately added the restaurant to the top of my endless "places to go" list.  ...Take notes and add it to yours.

You know when you drive by a barbecue restaurant and can smell brisket from a mile away?  Biskit Junkie has the same effect, except you can smell waffles and biscuits browning from afar.  We pulled into the parking lot, found parking (which is near impossible in Houston) and strolled into the cozy brunch crowd.  The walls are painted turquoise, slightly distressed, and the walls are adorned with minimal yet eye-catching artwork.  #Merica.

The menu: short, sweet, but will still leave you struggling to decide what to order.

I was having a pretty hard time deciding what to order.  After talking to an employee, I decided on the chicken and waffles, which comes with a generous heap of bacon.  I wasn't disappointed at all -- The meal comes with a medium-sized fried chicken breast, bacon, whipped cream, and syrup.

My friend is a vegetarian, so she ordered the El Chapo without chorizo.  Had she kept the chorizo, I may have gone in for a bite, but I'll wait until next time.  We split the corn fritters which were cooked to perfection -- Crispy and warm on the outside, warm and soft on the inside.

I also ordered a biscuit to-go which was a big hit at home, again for a vegetarian (weird, I know).  I got her the Huevos Rancheros biscuit, and she seemed to enjoy it.  Definitely eat it there if you can, though...beans and eggs aren't at their best after sitting in Houston traffic!

Seasons 52 and 52 Desserts

No, I didn't actually eat 52 desserts, but I wish!

The assortment of desserts at Seasons 52 is my favorite.  It looks like 52 shotglass-sized desserts are coming at you, but it's probably closer to 15.

We gathered for a much needed girls night to celebrate a friend's birthday.  Season's 52 is always a great spot since their menu changes constantly...you guessed it, depending on the season.

I'm always able to find something that sounds good, and if I'm unsure, I go for a flat bread.  I'm never disappointed.  I opted for the Lobster Pappardelle, which was the perfect choice for my pasta craving.  The sauce wasn't too thick but just creamy enough to coat the pasta and give the dish a little extra something.  I'm always hesitant to order lobster dishes because I'm a hungry girl, and I find that I never get enough food when ordering lobster.  The Pappardelle was definitely enough food and was delicious -- But of course I still had room for dessert!

We were treated to a beautiful display of desserts presented in shot glasses.  Seriously, the best idea ever.  I never have a problem ordering a full plate of dessert, but even I at times am too stuffed to accommodate an entire brownie a la mode.  These are the perfect four-bite servings for when you just need something sweet after dinner...so, always.  Plus, they're great for a big group of girls who might be saying "That's way too many calories".  Nah, it's just a shot glass, so every body will want one...no excuses!

I called dibs on the s'more one, obviously.  Peanut butter came in a close second.

We toasted the birthday girl with our champagne, fought over who got which dessert, and took a really poor-lit group photo, sorority pose and all.
