Hacks For That Time of The Month

Yeah, we're here to talk about the dreaded week.  If you're reading this and you're a man, it's probably a dreaded week for you too if you're dealing with a girlfriend, sister, coworker, any of us.  It's just not a good time, ever.  We're tired, moody, sluggish, and craving everything and anything.  Please tell me that's not just me!
organic tampons
Our period always sucks.  It is what it is and is a part of life, but I've found a few tips here and there that help me to feel better and more comfortable.  It's no magic trick, but making some small changes can improve your mood, energy, and your overall health.

So, what do I do to turn a terrible period into an OK one?

I workout.  You won't want to, and you'll feel like a fatigued snail, but a little bit of movement does the body good, especially during this time.  If you're really not feeling well, take it easy, but even going for a walk, jog, or doing some yoga helps balance me out.  I usually try to walk on the track outside just to get my legs moving and at least feel like I did something instead of sitting on my behind.

I use more natural products.  I recently made the switch to Seventh Generation tampons.  I'm not a name brand girl when it comes to periods, but after doing some research and tuning into my body, I wanted to find tampons and feminine care products that caused NO harm to me.  I mean, we put these inside of our bodies, so just like our food, it should be something that causes no harm or foul.
                                    best tampons
Seventh Generation products are free of chlorine processing, fragrance, and deodorants.  I cannot stand fragranced tampons or feminine care products.  Do not, I repeat, DO NOT use anything on your lady parts that has any type of fragrance.  Yeah, we might get a little funky, but DO NOT try to mask that fragrance with artificial chemicals/other fragrance.  Just don't.  Yuck.

Seventh Generation wants women to know what's in their feminine care products, and the brand advocates for ingredient disclosure in all products.  I'm all for this.  I don't want anything gross in my body, especially during this time of the month.  Unless it's a brownie, then maybe.

We check labels and ingredients on our food, so why not check them on our tampons and feminine care products?
                                    organic feminine care products
I'm kind of a snob when it comes to the applicator of my tampons.  It sounds crazy, but nothing drives me more crazy than a dry, scratchy paper applicator.  I know you just felt how awful that is.  I need a smooth, quality plastic applicator.

The new Seventh Generation Organic Cotton Tampons have a new BPA-free plastic applicator, and I approve of it 100%.  It's the type of applicator I've gotta have!  PLUS, this applicator is made of 95% plant-based materials, instead of gross ingredients like petroleum.

I picked up the normal and super boxes from Target and have to have both on-hand.  I throw a handful in my purse, keep them in my bathroom, hand them off to friends, and they've never let me down!

I also try to drink more water.  Key word, TRY.  Between the bloating and fatigue, some extra water and lemon won't hurt you.  I usually try to use a cute water bottle or inspire myself somehow to get in the extra ounces.

I nap.  Please tell me I'm not alone with this.  I just can't fight it.  I get SO exhausted during this week and sometimes just need to rest.

I stretch!  My lower back gets super tight regularly, but especially during my period, I have to really stretch it out.  I get crampy, and for some reason when I sleep it tightens up more than usual.  I love to incorporate some cat-cows and yoga to stretch it out.

K, I'm no expert with this and still struggle pretty frequently with my exhaustion during this time.  If you guys have any tips that make you feel better, PLEASE let us know!

This post is brought to you by Seventh Generation and Her Campus Media.  As always, all opinions are my own, and I truly do use these products and love/recommend these tampons to all my health-conscious women out there!

Staying Buff with BuffBoxx

I've always been addicted to getting mail.  Like, seriously.  I'm an online shopping addict, I love getting packages, and we all know too well that I love me some good fitness gear.

I shop enough as is, and I'm always trying to minimize my wardrobe (I have things spilling out of drawers constantly even though I try to clean out my closet every so often...), so I never really though to sign up for a subscription box, even though I've always loved the idea of them!

When I worked in beauty, the first ever subscription box I heard of was Ipsy.  Since then, I've seen so many amazing boxes launch, and I think they're awesome.  Whether you're someone like me who has too many products and wants to cut down on your stash and your spending, or you're someone who doesn't buy much and would benefit form having personalized items sent to you every month, subscription boxes are the way to go!  No mall lines, straight to your door, and SO affordable.

I found BuffBoxx on Instagram and knew I wanted one.  Their pro box includes Reebok or Under Armour, hellooooo yes please!

I got my first box and was SO excited to open it up!  ...I'm actually wearing the black Reebok tank as I write this post and just did my workout for day 15 of the #FindYourSweat challenge in it, so I love it!

Y'all know I'm all about giving you the hookup, so if you want to try BuffBoxx, use code 'CORI' during checkout for $5 off your first box.  YES to saving some dolla bills!

Watch my unboxing to see what I got in my box/what sorts of things you can expect to get!

Don't you love getting things that help you look forward to the gym?!

Cori Scherer Beauty Tips Nature Made Vitamins
I'd call myself a bit of a product junkie, and I'm always trying to find the next best thing, but when it comes to my staple beauty hacks, I like to think I have them down.

Regardless of what products I'm trying or what my makeup routine is, I have a few go-to hacks that I do no matter what.  I do these when I'm getting fully dressed up or when I'm doing a light makeup look for a chill day.
Nature Made Adult Gummies
You know those things that you just have to do, or products you need to use, to feel ready?  These are mine.  I've been doing these for a while and don't feel like I've really started my day if I haven't checked these off my list!  These are the tips that make me look and feel my best with pretty close to no effort at all.  You can do all of these steps in about 2-3 minutes (literally)!

My top beauty hack is staying hydrated.  Yeah, yeah, I know you hear this all the time.  I get tired of hearing it too, but it's the truth.  Forget any products you're using on your skin -- If your body isn't hydrated, it's going to show on the inside and the outside.
How to drink more water

You'll notice puffier skin, dryness, dizziness, ad dullness.  When I've had enough water, I feel better, my skin looks more plump, and it's just giving our body what it needs to function.

My second hack is taking the Nature Made® Hair Skin & Nails Adult Gummies.  These are my favorite addition to my beauty routine, and all you have to do is chew em' up.  No fuss or extra time added to your routine.
Nature Made Adult Gummy Vitamins
These gummies provide 2500 mcg of biotin and 100 mg of vitamin C per serving, which is the perfect dynamic duo.  They may help support healthy hair, skin and nails in those deficient in biotin.  Vitamin C provides antioxidant support and supports collagen synthesis .  I chew two of these a day as part of my go-to routine!  They come in delicious mixed berry, cranberry and blueberry flavors, so you get variety the taste!

Y'all know how I am about making sure I put quality product into my body, and these gummies make the cut.  Nature Made®  has the 1st gummies to receive USP verification.  The U.S. Pharmacopeia Convention (USP) is a third party nonprofit organization that verifies products for purity, potency, and quality.  I'm all about purity and quality!  Learn more about Nature Made and USP here.

OK, my final two hacks are more cosmetic related, but they're a must on my list.  One of my top beauty hacks is to curl my eyelashes.  I swear, my eyes go from slightly awake to fully awake with a couple curls.  I just hold the curl for a few seconds, release, and repeat.  I do this when I'm wearing mascara, or if I'm leaving the house without it!  It just makes such a difference in how open my eyes look!

Finally, a good nude lip liner is a must.  I love to slightly over line my lips with the perfect MLBB (my lips but better) shade to give the illusion that they're just a liiitle bit more plump than they are.  Plus, it adds just a little bit of color to add that fresh, awake look that I love.

K we all know I have a million other things that go into my beauty routine, but these are my go-to tips that I have to do everyday!

What are y'alls hacks that make you you?  Do you do any of these?

How To Create Opportunity

We live in a world now where we can make anything happen.  Literally, anything.  Think about it.  We can create the job we want, work with people we choose to work with, and work with brands that might seem "out of reach".

how to create opportunity for yourself
Bodysuit (Similar) / Skirt (Similar) / Boots

I am by no means the guru of entrepreneurship, creating opportunities, nor am I claiming to know it all.  But, I've learned a lot along my journey and think it's important to share how POSSIBLE things are, and how much we're capable of with the resources that we have.

To give a little background on me, I worked in influencer marketing and public relations for a global cosmetics company (Cover FX) for about two and a half years.  I was going to tons of badass events, meeting amazing, creative women, and seeing them live what looked like the life.

They were hustling.  They were creating their own schedule, signing their own contracts, creating their own content, and enjoying it.  And getting paid.

I didn't fully realize how possible all of this was, and just how vast opportunity was in life until I was working this job.  I'd work 9-5, attend these glamorous events in LA, NYC, and Miami, and wonder how they made all of this happen.  The answer: they hustled and they just made it happen.  Not overnight, not instantly, but with dedication and consistency.

I started my blog after attending a few of these events and wanting to create content myself.  I figured if I was already active in the industry, attending events, and had these resources at my fingertips, why not use them?

how to sell yourself
My key tip to creating opportunity is just that.  Use your resources.  I'm not telling you to be an evil person and use people, but look around at who you know and think of if/how they can help you.

One of the best pieces of advice I've heard is "you don't have to do everything by yourself".  If you're anything like me, trusting others, especially when it comes to your reputation, work, or brand, isn't easy.  I'm not one to pawn off responsibility and tasks when it comes to something that involves my personal brand, and I was 100% the kid who would do group projects by myself because I was so Type-A and had to know what was going into the work.  Call me crazy or call me ambitious.

Whatever opportunity you're trying to create, look at your network and figure out how you can start planting some seeds.  Can you collaborate with someone in your network?  Can you do trade work and offer them something for their time/resources in return?  There are SO many possibilities here.

Grow your network.  I like to say that I know a lot of people, but I have a small personal circle.  I've met a lot of people and have a large "network", but my true circle of close friends is small.  I confide in a very small group, but when it comes to my connections, I've built a network over the years that has helped me out big time.

Get out of your comfort zone, but be strategic.  This is something I had to teach myself and one thing I struggled with for a while.  Part of getting out of our comfort zone and growing our network is attending events, dinners, meetings, etc. that you might not 100% want to go to.  DO NOT say "yes" to every invite or opportunity that comes your way (click here to read why saying "no" is so important).  You'll waste your time and in turn might take away from your true path, but you'll probably do this a few times before really figuring out what's worth your time and what's not.

Figure out what meetings and events may benefit you, either professionally or personally.  Use those to leverage yourself, your brand, or your business, and get out there and sell yourself.  Don't be shy, timid, or sell yourself short either.

I attended an event not too long ago that I wasn't really feeling.  It was a fashion event, and I wasn't feeling like making small talk for hours and being around what I saw as "foo-foo" and "uppity" for hours.  I knew I should go and check it out.

I met so many great connections at this event, and if I hadn't gone, I wouldn't be co-hosting the radio show I am now.  I wouldn't have made the connection to help land me that opportunity.

white long sleeve bodysuit outfit
Pitch yourself.  A lot of opportunities I've carved out for myself were because I FOUND them, they didn't find me.  Don't wait for things to fall into your lap.  If there's a company you want to reach out to, do it!  You've got the whole Internet at your fingertips.  Do your research and find the appropriate contact, reach out to them, and draft a proper pitch (click that link to see my tips on drafting the best PR email).

Follow up!  Your work isn't done even if you send the perfect PR pitch.  Think about how many emails people get per day.  What you view as a priority might not be on their radar, so create a calendar reminder or flag your emails to remember to follow up.  Get your name in front of them, but also don't annoy the crap out of someone.  I usually like to allow about 3-5 day for a friendly, non-invasive followup.

K, hope these tips helped to at least SHOW the world we live in.  We have the Internet, social media, and resources that make it too easy to get in touch with people.  Get out there, sell yourself, and let's get one step closer to our goals.

Find Your Sweat Challenge

OK, y'all!  The time has finally come for me to officially announce a project I've been working hard on.  That hard work is about to translate into some serious sweat and physical work too, so let me explain.

Have you ever met someone and just instantly connected?  Your interests, goals, motivation, and drive seems to just align with zero effort?
Houston fitness bloggers
Adidas Fitness Model
I met my friend Karinn, @feedthecurves, after we slid into each other's DMs on Instagram.  We both followed each other and were fans of the fitness content we were putting out, so we exchanged a few messages and met up at a coffee shop.

After hours of brainstorming, chatting about ourselves, men, food, the works, we came up with an awesome idea and since then, have been plugging away at this project for the past month.

We kept getting at the idea that when Fall and Winter roll around, we get lazy as hell.  At least I do.  I don't know about you guys, but when I was working corporate, I'd get off work around 5:30-6:30 PM, it'd be dark outside, and I'd say "screw the gym...I just want to be on the couch".

I'm the first to admit I haven't been the best with my fitness and health commitments lately.  I haven't been the most consistent, have been eating too many desserts, and I just haven't had that motivation I'm used to when it comes to my workouts.

I've been in a little bit of a gym rut for....I want to say almost a year now.  I feel like every month I'm talking about how much I slacked off and how little I exercised.  Habits become lifestyle, so it's time for some CHANGE!
                      adidas women workout clothes
OK, the fun stuff.  Karinn and I decided that since this is about the time we all start to get a little lazy, lethargic, and eat everything in sight...we are starting a 30-day fitness challenge!

I've never done a fitness challenge, so I'm SO excited to be doing this and to have it be my own.

The challenge is designed to help ourselves and everyone out there #FindYourSweat (yes, that's our hashtag).  It's designed to encourage us all to simply get off our ass, stay active, and try something new!

We'll be showcasing a handful of Houston studios, gyms, and classes and sharing tons of different options with everyone.  If you're in a gym rut like myself, you might be looking for your new thing.

Our challenge is here to help motivate, inspire, and just have fun throughout the month of November!  We'll be trying something new everyday.  Yeah, every. single. day.  I'm gonna need a massage.

So whether you're into high intensity interval training, dance, boxing, or you have no idea what you're interested in, we'll be here to show you some fun options and share our favorites.

I'm going through this challenge to motivate myself as well, so we're truly all in this together.  I'll be off my booty every day finding something new that puts me out of my comfort zone and forces me to stay active through all the insane Thanksgiving and daily eating that I've been doing.

You all know I'm all about balance, so this 30 day challenge is in no way shape or form meant to indicate that you have to workout every single day of your life to be healthy.  I don't recommend that at all.  I'll be including a few low impact and low intensity options in this challenge too, and I'm doing it in 30 days to simply show tons of different options and motivate us through a usually lazy time.

I'd LOVE for anyone who's interested to engage with us throughout the month and follow along with our #FindYourSweat challenge.  If you're doing something active, trying something new, grabbing a girlfriend to try a new class with, or just sweating it out, post to Instagram and use the hashtag #FindYourSweat.
Marble sports bra adidas women leggings
On December 1, once the challenge is complete, we'll be choosing 2 winners who consistently engaged with our challenge to win an insanely dope swag bag!

The prize will include tons of different things to help you stay motivated and just enjoy a healthy lifestyle.  I can't spill the deets yet, but I'll be sharing more soon and on Instagram shortly!

OK, say a little prayer for me and my muscles as we begin this crazy journey.  WE GOT THIS!

Red Carpet Peel and Laser Genesis at Yana Skincare

Let's be real...there's NOTHING like having clear, glowing skin.  For me, I wasn't naturally blessed with what I'd consider "perfect" skin.  It's not terrible, but I always have a little friend or two (or three or four) somewhere on my face.

Between working out, wearing makeup, having a ton of hair, and just being a regular, hormonal gal, my skin is something I'm always trying to keep in check.  I'm a stickler about my skincare...anyone who's ever spent the night with me knows how much of a process it is.

I also filmed an entire video on my nighttime skincare routine here, just so you can see how meticulous I am.  I know that less is more, but routine and consistency with skincare is key.
                                       laser face treatments skin peel
I think we sometimes forget how crucial facials and treatments are for our skin too.  I wouldn't say I forget, but let's be real, it ain't cheap.  But any esthetician will tell you that incorporating regular deep cleansing facials or treatments (tailored to your skin type, of course) into your routine will change your skin.  And they're not lying!

If you follow me on Instagram, you might've seen me on the table at Yana Skincare looking like robocop.    I had tiny goggles on with a headband to keep my hair back, and a beeping laser that was talking to us every few minutes.
                              face peels for sensitive skin
I went into Yana Skincare for their laser genesis treatment and their red carpet peel.  Because who doesn't want to feel like they have red carpet skin after a treatment?  I better look like I'm walking the red carpet and like I've had a gallon of water.

We started with the laser genesis and finished with the peel.  Laser genesis is basically a gentle treatment designed to restore the skin's natural glow and reverse damage from the sun, aging, or scars with zero downtime.  Literally zero downtime.
Laser Genesis laser treatment dark spots acne
I've had a few other treatments done where I looked CRAZY.  It just depends on the strength and intensity of the treatment, but with laser genesis you get the results of an intense treatment in 30 minutes with hardly any redness, no sensitivity, and no downtime.

The main thing I was excited for with laser genesis was the shrinking of my pores and of course, the glow.  I also have a couple sun spots on the side of my face, and this is perfect for reversing sun damage and fixing any scars or dark spots from acne or the sun.
laser treatment face for acne scars dark spots sun damage
If you're wondering if it hurts, NO!  It just feels like you're at the beach and laying out.  The laser emits heat, so you'll just feel a little hot whenever it's passing over an area of your face.  Nothing we can't tolerate.

We finished the laser treatment and moved on the peel.  The red carpet peel was so quick and simple, I almost didn't even know that it was being done.

If you're prepping for an event, a photo shoot, or just want that beautiful, glowing perfected look, this is the peel you need.  I was so surprised with how bright my skin looked immediately after.

The peel gently hydrates and nourishes the skin, exfoliates, decongests clogged pores (my biggest problem), and left me with my favorite, glowing finish.

I'll keep you all posted on how my skin continues to look.  The results sometimes take a couple days to take full effect, but it's been a few and I'm looooving the overall finish.  I'll 100% be back for both treatments.

Yana Skincare was SO generous and offered to give anyone who mentions this blog post/my name $25 off any service or product.  ANY service, y'all.  They do facials, body contouring, laser treatments, botox, hair removal, and fillers.
                 skinceuticals products Houston
PLUS...if you're a new client, you'll get 15% off towards your second treatment/visit.

I mean, I'm down to do a whole girls day there, so if you're wanting to try it out hit me up and let's beautify.

The red carpet peel will be perfect for everything with the holidays coming I might just need to do another.

Also, I'm always posting on my Instagram story anytime I get a cool procedure done like this!  I shared some real-time videos while I was at Yana Skincare and it's always fun to interact!  Of course, not while I have my little robot goggles on though.  Safety first.

Let me know if you guys try anything out at Yana!!  Send before and afters on the gram!

HUGE thank you to Yana Skincare and my girl Emily for having me in and pampering my skin!  So excited to go back!

5 Ways To Improve Your Credit Score

I’ve been talking a lot about finances, credit, and tips to save money recently.  Call me crazy, but the topic excites me, and I think integrating it into my umbrella of overall health is SO crucial.

how to improve your credit score

A credit score is more valuable than we realize. It’s a way for other potential investors (banks, lenders, etc.) to view your past and current payment histories, and a good credit score can open doors for you. Whether you’re in the market to lease a car, rent an apartment, or purchase a new electronic, your credit affects your financial well-being.

We all want to know (and should know) how credit works and how it’s determined. Here are some helpful and simple ways to improve your credit over time.  And if you’re reading this thinking “Mine’s already so bad, it’s too late” or any other doubtful, pessimistic thought…STOP.  It’s not too late to improve, so just keep reading!

how to improve credit score debt

Get a copy of your credit report

Before you even begin to work on your credit score, you need to know where you currently stand and the areas you need the most improvement. A good place to start is looking at your credit report to view all your activity including bank cards, auto loans, mortgages, and more. You’ll be able to see all your revolving accounts, installment loans, payment histories, open and closed accounts, and recent credit and loan applications. Under federal law, you are allowed one free credit report every 12 months, so take advantage!

Report errors and explain yourself

Once you’ve received your credit report, be sure to go over it thoroughly in case you discover any mistakes that could’ve been made. If your credit report isn’t accurate, you have the right to dispute errors by contacting the credit bureau or the point of contact who listed the account of your credit report. A study by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group found that 79 percent of credit reports had a mistake which led to credit denial. It’s also always a good idea to explain your situation if you feel your credit history doesn’t show the entire story. You can write a letter explanation of 100 words or less of extenuating circumstances that can help in your favor.

Apply for a personal loan

A good way to boost your credit score is by taking out a personal loan. When your credit cards are maxed out or you’re dealing with high-interest rates, a personal loan can help consolidate debt. A personal loan is an installment loan, so whatever debt you have on that specific loan won’t hurt your credit score as bad as a credit card that’s almost to its limit would. Personal loans have lower interest rates than credit cards, that typically range from 10-20% or higher. Whether you’re paying off existing high-interest debt with a lower-interest personal loan or you’re combining multiple debts into a single repayment to keep things manageable, applying for a personal loan might be in your best interest.

Pay your bills on time

The best way to start building your credit is by paying your bills by the due date and always making a payment, even if it’s the minimum due amount. I’ve had SO many conversations with friends and others who don’t realize how necessary this is.  Do NOT skip a payment…ever.

This means credit cards, parking tickets, rent, gym memberships, etc. Setting up automatic payments is a smart way to never accidentally forget about a bill and avoid late or overdraft fees. Your payment history accounts for 35% of your credit score and it’s determined by the size of the late payment and the length of time it’s been overdue

Be smart about what bills you pay first by paying ones you can pay in full, ones that have been overdue for the longest amount of time, and ones with the highest interest rate.

Beware of scams

The FTC has acknowledged that many scam companies claim they will promise to clean up your credit reports. Be careful on these sites because there are many credit-repair scams that specifically target consumers with poor credit.

Some of these claims include removing negative information from your credit report or requesting a service fee upfront before anything is even done. Only time and a personal debt repayment plan will improve your credit. If you feel lost or overwhelmed by your credit situation, there are always great resources such as seeking professional assistance. Find a trustworthy and credible credit counseling agency for guidance.

The length of time it takes to rebuild your credit score depends on the reasons behind the change. Consistently check your credit report and credit score to make sure you’re always up to date. In the meantime, get it together, hold yourself accountable, and start paying off your bills and spending credit responsibly.

It’s a process and might seem complicated, but start small and take care of the basics to balance out.  Once you get back on track, your credit score will reflect a more financially heathy and responsible you.
