Holiday Beauty and Wellness Gift Guide

It is seriously the most wonderful time of the year!

I've always loved giving gifts (don't get me wrong, receiving is great too), but there's something about giving the perfect gift that's always made me feel better.  Like, you hit the nail on the head or actually pay attention to what someone's been wanting/needs in their life.

There are so many different gift guides and ideas out there, so I wanted to gear this one towards beauty/wellness.  Gifts to help someone feel a little nicer, take care of themselves, or just do a little pampering that they might not otherwise do.

I rounded up a few of my top picks, and...they're all under $100.  I know $100 is still a good chunk of change, but I think these are all super nice gifts that if you're able to swing would make the perfect holiday present for someone special in your life!

The only gift that miiiiight be pushing the $100 limit is the spa treatment that I mention, but you can tailor this to the person you're gifting or your budget.  Laser hair removal often runs for less than $100, and you can always substitute a massage for an hour of reflexology (usually about $20).

Trust me, there are options to tweak it and you can stay in your budget!

Sanctuary Spa

I'm not religious (that's a whole other post but I'm just saying), but when it comes to this sanctuary, there's no way anything was going to keep me away!

I posted earlier this month about the #FindYourSweat challenge that I've been doing with my girl Karinn.  We've been working out every day and have been showcasing different ways to stay active and motivated in Houston.

You can't even imaging how sore our bodies have been through this month.  I mean, maybe you can if you're really active or if you've ever played a sport and know the struggle of consistent, intense workouts, but DANG have we been sore!  And hungry!  These workouts have been working up an appetite.

We had the chance to spend some time at Sanctuary Spa for a 60 minute massage and infusion tub.  I'm not lying when I tell you I was counting down the days until this massage for about two weeks.  I would dream about laying on the table and having someone go to town on my back, neck, and shoulders.

A lot of our workouts have involved high intensity training with strength training, and we'e done a handful of pushups, back exercises, and workouts that have every tiny muscle in my back crazy sore.

While our challenge focused mostly on fitness, we didn't want to neglect the importance of self care and de-stressing.  We live in a world that is constantly "go, go, go", and the nonstop lifestyle can breed stress that none of us want to deal with.

Whatever health/fitness journey you may be on, you must remember to take care of your wellbeing, mental health, and keep stress to a minimum.  Stress will wreak havoc on any health progress you make, and it's just as detrimental (if not more) to your health as a poor diet, lack of exercise, etc.

The spa has that perfect spa-like aroma when we walked in, and we knew it had to be our favorite Source Vital products!  Source Vital is a local Houston apothecary company with skincare, essential oils, natural deodorant, and SO many products...go check them out!

I've finally made the switch to natural deodorant (I use the Source Vital rollerball), and I'm SO shocked at how easy it was.  I was afraid I'd stink or that it wouldn't do the job, but I have no complaints.

Back to the spa...We were walked to the relaxation room and treated with water, tea, and some snacks.  You already know I went straight to the snack table to scope it out.  They had a chocolate s'more bark that I inhaled

My massage was to-die-for.  I had my therapist focus on my back and shoulders, where I usually hold the most tension.  The oils are amazing, and I loved that they used some hot towels throughout the massage to loosen the muscles and remove the crazy oily feeling.  It really helped to relax my back and just felt nice!

The infusion tub...THIS was something I've never seen at a spa before and really enjoyed.  Think of a big jacuzzi all to yourself, relaxing music, and dimmed lights.  There you go.  They'll customize the bath to your needs -- I went for a very relaxing mixture, so my therapist used goat's milk, eucalyptus, and other relaxing oils and additives to make it as soothing as possible.

OK, so the best part...Sanctuary Spa has a membership program where you can pay $79 a month which includes a 50 minute massage or facial (which is usually $90 alone), free product, 25% off all service upgrades, and more.

When was the last time you treated yourself to some quality me time?  And I'm not talking about sitting in rush hour traffic by yourself listening to the radio...I'm talking about dedicated, thought-out time for you and only you!

Hacks For That Time of The Month

Yeah, we're here to talk about the dreaded week.  If you're reading this and you're a man, it's probably a dreaded week for you too if you're dealing with a girlfriend, sister, coworker, any of us.  It's just not a good time, ever.  We're tired, moody, sluggish, and craving everything and anything.  Please tell me that's not just me!

Our period always sucks.  It is what it is and is a part of life, but I've found a few tips here and there that help me to feel better and more comfortable.  It's no magic trick, but making some small changes can improve your mood, energy, and your overall health.

So, what do I do to turn a terrible period into an OK one?

I workout.  You won't want to, and you'll feel like a fatigued snail, but a little bit of movement does the body good, especially during this time.  If you're really not feeling well, take it easy, but even going for a walk, jog, or doing some yoga helps balance me out.  I usually try to walk on the track outside just to get my legs moving and at least feel like I did something instead of sitting on my behind.

I use more natural products.  I recently made the switch to Seventh Generation tampons.  I'm not a name brand girl when it comes to periods, but after doing some research and tuning into my body, I wanted to find tampons and feminine care products that caused NO harm to me.  I mean, we put these inside of our bodies, so just like our food, it should be something that causes no harm or foul.

Seventh Generation products are free of chlorine processing, fragrance, and deodorants.  I cannot stand fragranced tampons or feminine care products.  Do not, I repeat, DO NOT use anything on your lady parts that has any type of fragrance.  Yeah, we might get a little funky, but DO NOT try to mask that fragrance with artificial chemicals/other fragrance.  Just don't.  Yuck.

Seventh Generation wants women to know what's in their feminine care products, and the brand advocates for ingredient disclosure in all products.  I'm all for this.  I don't want anything gross in my body, especially during this time of the month.  Unless it's a brownie, then maybe.

We check labels and ingredients on our food, so why not check them on our tampons and feminine care products?

I'm kind of a snob when it comes to the applicator of my tampons.  It sounds crazy, but nothing drives me more crazy than a dry, scratchy paper applicator.  I know you just felt how awful that is.  I need a smooth, quality plastic applicator.

The new Seventh Generation Organic Cotton Tampons have a new BPA-free plastic applicator, and I approve of it 100%.  It's the type of applicator I've gotta have!  PLUS, this applicator is made of 95% plant-based materials, instead of gross ingredients like petroleum.

I picked up the normal and super boxes from Target and have to have both on-hand.  I throw a handful in my purse, keep them in my bathroom, hand them off to friends, and they've never let me down!

I also try to drink more water.  Key word, TRY.  Between the bloating and fatigue, some extra water and lemon won't hurt you.  I usually try to use a cute water bottle or inspire myself somehow to get in the extra ounces.

I nap.  Please tell me I'm not alone with this.  I just can't fight it.  I get SO exhausted during this week and sometimes just need to rest.

I stretch!  My lower back gets super tight regularly, but especially during my period, I have to really stretch it out.  I get crampy, and for some reason when I sleep it tightens up more than usual.  I love to incorporate some cat-cows and yoga to stretch it out.

I'd call myself a bit of a product junkie, and I'm always trying to find the next best thing, but when it comes to my staple beauty hacks, I like to think I have them down.

Regardless of what products I'm trying or what my makeup routine is, I have a few go-to hacks that I do no matter what.  I do these when I'm getting fully dressed up or when I'm doing a light makeup look for a chill day.

My top beauty hack is staying hydrated.  Yeah, yeah, I know you hear this all the time.  I get tired of hearing it too, but it's the truth.  Forget any products you're using on your skin -- If your body isn't hydrated, it's going to show on the inside and the outside.

Finally, a good nude lip liner is a must.  I love to slightly over line my lips with the perfect MLBB (my lips but better) shade to give the illusion that they're just a liiitle bit more plump than they are.  Plus, it adds just a little bit of color to add that fresh, awake look that I love.

How To Create Opportunity

We live in a world now where we can make anything happen.  Literally, anything.  Think about it.  We can create the job we want, work with people we choose to work with, and work with brands that might seem "out of reach".

I am by no means the guru of entrepreneurship, creating opportunities, nor am I claiming to know it all.  But, I've learned a lot along my journey and think it's important to share how POSSIBLE things are, and how much we're capable of with the resources that we have.

To give a little background on me, I worked in influencer marketing and public relations for a global cosmetics company (Cover FX) for about two and a half years.  I was going to tons of badass events, meeting amazing, creative women, and seeing them live what looked like the life.  

They were hustling.  They were creating their own schedule, signing their own contracts, creating their own content, and enjoying it.  And getting paid.

I didn't fully realize how possible all of this was, and just how vast opportunity was in life until I was working this job.  I'd work 9-5, attend these glamorous events in LA, NYC, and Miami, and wonder how they made all of this happen.  The answer: they hustled and they just made it happen.  Not overnight, not instantly, but with dedication and consistency.

I started my blog after attending a few of these events and wanting to create content myself.  I figured if I was already active in the industry, attending events, and had these resources at my fingertips, why not use them?

My key tip to creating opportunity is just that.  Use your resources.  I'm not telling you to be an evil person and use people, but look around at who you know and think of if/how they can help you.

One of the best pieces of advice I've heard is "you don't have to do everything by yourself".  If you're anything like me, trusting others, especially when it comes to your reputation, work, or brand, isn't easy.  I'm not one to pawn off responsibility and tasks when it comes to something that involves my personal brand, and I was 100% the kid who would do group projects by myself because I was so Type-A and had to know what was going into the work.  Call me crazy or call me ambitious.

Whatever opportunity you're trying to create, look at your network and figure out how you can start planting some seeds.  Can you collaborate with someone in your network?  Can you do trade work and offer them something for their time/resources in return?  There are SO many possibilities here.

Grow your network.  I like to say that I know a lot of people, but I have a small personal circle.  I've met a lot of people and have a large "network", but my true circle of close friends is small.  I confide in a very small group, but when it comes to my connections, I've built a network over the years that has helped me out big time.

Get out of your comfort zone, but be strategic.  This is something I had to teach myself and one thing I struggled with for a while.  Part of getting out of our comfort zone and growing our network is attending events, dinners, meetings, etc. that you might not 100% want to go to.  DO NOT say "yes" to every invite or opportunity that comes your way (click here to read why saying "no" is so important).  You'll waste your time and in turn might take away from your true path, but you'll probably do this a few times before really figuring out what's worth your time and what's not.

Figure out what meetings and events may benefit you, either professionally or personally.  Use those to leverage yourself, your brand, or your business, and get out there and sell yourself.  Don't be shy, timid, or sell yourself short either.

I attended an event not too long ago that I wasn't really feeling.  It was a fashion event, and I wasn't feeling like making small talk for hours and being around what I saw as "foo-foo" and "uppity" for hours.  I knew I should go and check it out.  

I met so many great connections at this event, and if I hadn't gone, I wouldn't be co-hosting the radio show I am now.  I wouldn't have made the connection to help land me that opportunity.

Pitch yourself.  A lot of opportunities I've carved out for myself were because I FOUND them, they didn't find me.  Don't wait for things to fall into your lap.  If there's a company you want to reach out to, do it!  You've got the whole Internet at your fingertips.  Do your research and find the appropriate contact, reach out to them, and draft a proper pitch (click that link to see my tips on drafting the best PR email).  

Follow up!  Your work isn't done even if you send the perfect PR pitch.  Think about how many emails people get per day.  What you view as a priority might not be on their radar, so create a calendar reminder or flag your emails to remember to follow up.  Get your name in front of them, but also don't annoy the crap out of someone.  I usually like to allow about 3-5 day for a friendly, non-invasive followup.  

K, hope these tips helped to at least SHOW the world we live in.  We have the Internet, social media, and resources that make it too easy to get in touch with people.  Get out there, sell yourself, and let's get one step closer to our goals.

Find Your Sweat Challenge

OK, y'all!  The time has finally come for me to officially announce a project I've been working hard on.  That hard work is about to translate into some serious sweat and physical work too, so let me explain.

I met my friend Karinn, @feedthecurves, after we slid into each other's DMs on Instagram.  We both followed each other and were fans of the fitness content we were putting out, so we exchanged a few messages and met up at a coffee shop.

After hours of brainstorming, chatting about ourselves, men, food, the works, we came up with an awesome idea and since then, have been plugging away at this project for the past month.

We kept getting at the idea that when Fall and Winter roll around, we get lazy as hell.  At least I do.  I don't know about you guys, but when I was working corporate, I'd get off work around 5:30-6:30 PM, it'd be dark outside, and I'd say "screw the gym...I just want to be on the couch".

I'm the first to admit I haven't been the best with my fitness and health commitments lately.  I haven't been the most consistent, have been eating too many desserts, and I just haven't had that motivation I'm used to when it comes to my workouts.

I've been in a little bit of a gym rut for....I want to say almost a year now.  I feel like every month I'm talking about how much I slacked off and how little I exercised.  Habits become lifestyle, so it's time for some CHANGE!

OK, the fun stuff.  Karinn and I decided that since this is about the time we all start to get a little lazy, lethargic, and eat everything in sight...we are starting a 30-day fitness challenge!

I've never done a fitness challenge, so I'm SO excited to be doing this and to have it be my own.

The challenge is designed to help ourselves and everyone out there #FindYourSweat (yes, that's our hashtag).  It's designed to encourage us all to simply get off our ass, stay active, and try something new!

We'll be showcasing a handful of Houston studios, gyms, and classes and sharing tons of different options with everyone.  If you're in a gym rut like myself, you might be looking for your new thing.

Our challenge is here to help motivate, inspire, and just have fun throughout the month of November!  We'll be trying something new everyday.  Yeah, every. single. day.  I'm gonna need a massage.

So whether you're into high intensity interval training, dance, boxing, or you have no idea what you're interested in, we'll be here to show you some fun options and share our favorites.

I'm going through this challenge to motivate myself as well, so we're truly all in this together.  I'll be off my booty every day finding something new that puts me out of my comfort zone and forces me to stay active through all the insane Thanksgiving and daily eating that I've been doing.

You all know I'm all about balance, so this 30 day challenge is in no way shape or form meant to indicate that you have to workout every single day of your life to be healthy.  I don't recommend that at all.  I'll be including a few low impact and low intensity options in this challenge too, and I'm doing it in 30 days to simply show tons of different options and motivate us through a usually lazy time.
